Hi, I’m Kadu, YARG’s Lead Artist. I’m not very good at writing, but I’ll do my best to explain the process of creating the YARG Rings.

Today we going to talk a bit of the process to craft the rings everyone love (specially Hugh) and how this was the best approach for a lot of design problems.

When we start thinking about the Music Library rework we had a problem, how to show the difficulty for 10 instruments at same time? How to make the page less cluttered but still with all the data we need?

The Band had always used dots to represent the tiers, but this was too cluttered.
Our first attempt

Hugh came up with the idea to use the instrument icon instead, which saved a lot of space and made it easier to add more instruments in the future.

A true life saver

I created the first concept in Photoshop, testing a few colors to see what looked best. The first attempt was better, but it still felt too busy. We decided to go with white for the main difficulties and red for devil tier, as this was the most visually appealing option.

It’s better but still too much going on

We going in the right direction, doesn’t feel perfect but we have more space at least, time for more brainstorm, thinking how to make it better, we decided to go with the white color for main difficulties and red for devil tier cause it just fits better also easier to notice in the blue background.

The second concept evolved a lot, and we managed to make the same idea look even better. We were really happy with the results, as we had saved a lot of space while still making the information clear and easy to read.

We love this
We really saved a lot of space using rings

The YARG Rings have been used in a number of different ways, including displaying the difficulty of songs in the Music Library and tracking progress towards achievements. They’re a simple and elegant solution that has helped us to save space and improve the user experience.
